Zabumbê-bum-á is a landmark recording in the history of free music. Pascoal is in top form here, and is likewise all over the map. Zabumbê-bum-á finds him developing his organic capacity for fusing experimentations with Nordestino folk traditions at the absolute forefront of experimentation with jazz music internationally in 1979. There are some relatively restrained compositions here too, no doubt, but Pascoal is always blending, in an entirely sui generis way, the outside and familiar, inventive and traditional, and so on. Catch him in Berkeley next month, still at it at 86.
